The Indiana University East women's golf team finished the opening round of the Lawrence Technological University Spring Break Invitational in third place on Thursday, March 9.

Annie Gillock and Jalyn Bruns led the Red Wolves on the Grand National Golf Club Lake Course as both ended the day with an 88.

"The course definitely was challenging with a lot of water and sand bunkers," Bruns said. "I tried my best to stay positive mentally and take it shot-by-shot throughout the round."

Gillock and Bruns are tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard.

"Today was a tough day for everyone out there for a multitude of reasons," Gillock said. "The golf course was playing pretty long. Combined with it just being a long day and the opening tournament of the season, I got off to a slow start today. Once I started getting some pars under my belt, I was feeling pretty good."

The other scores for IU East were Brooklynn Cromwell (89, T12th), Liv Sanders (95, T26th) and Katie Craig (108, 44th). Josalyn Lewis played as an individual carding a 98, which puts her in a tie for 32nd.

"I'm proud of everyone on the team for sticking with it today," Gillock said. "There's supposed to be some weather working through tomorrow, so it'll probably be another long day, but nothing we can't handle."

Campbellsville University leads the field of nine squads with a 345. Lawrence Tech is in second at 358 followed by the Red Wolves at 360. River States Conference foe Midway University is in fourth at 362.

Connor Geralds of Campbellsville posted the top score on Thursday with an 81.

IU East is scheduled to begin the final round on Friday with Lewis teeing off at 9:55 a.m. (IU East time).
