MBB falls in Mutchner Cup
The Earlham College men's basketball team battled Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the John Mutchner Cup on Wednesday evening. The Engineers emerged victorious in the contest 77-65.
Earlham and Rose-Hulman compete in the John Mutchner Cup every year on the team's first matchup of the season. John is a 1956 graduate of Earlham where he played basketball and baseball. In 1955, he garnered all-Hoosier College Conference and Quaker most valuable player honors as a member of the Quakers' best conference championship baseball team. After graduating from Earlham, he served as athletic director and men's basketball coach at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for 25 years. His overall basketball coaching record was 388-319 with six conference championships and five NCAA tournament bids. John has been inducted into the athletic Hall of Fames at both Earlham and Rose-Hulman.
Jaden Terry led the Quaker effort with 29 points, five, rebounds, four assists, and two steals, all team highs. Tommy Makabu recorded 12 points, and brought down three offensive rebounds for four total boards. James Holder reached double-digits with 10 points.
The Quakers shot 53% from field goals in the first half, but trailed by eight going into the break. The Engineers hit at a 64% clip from 3-point range in the opening period, and pulled away in the final seven minutes after the Quakers led early.
Earlham will be back in action on Saturday at home against Anderson University. The game is scheduled for 3 pm, and will follow the women's contest.
