Men's Soccer: Season Preview

Men's Soccer: Season Preview

WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR?

Record: 5-12-1. The Red Wolves won four straight road matches at the end of the regular season.

Conference: 5-4. IU East has qualified for the River States Conference Championships in all five seasons in the history of the program.

RED WOLVES IN THE RANKINGS

6th - IU East tied with Brescia University for sixth place in the RSC men's soccer preseason poll.

QUOTABLE

"Definitely excited to see what this group can become over the next 2½ months. We've already seen some flashes through training that have shown our potential, but consistency is going to be a major push for us. We're an awfully young and new team with over half the roster new players." - IU East head coach Steve Moore.

"Our schedule this year should be a little less daunting as well. Last year's schedule was very stout as all but one of our non-conference opponents finished with an above .500 record. This year's schedule should allow us to build a bit more confidence leading into conference play. In addition, this year sees us renew our crosstown rivalry with Earlham, so that should be exciting." - IU East head coach Steve Moore.

BY THE NUMBERS

2 - Callum Coleman and Alex Visscher are the returning All-RSC First Team performers for the Red Wolves from last season.

4 - The Red Wolves play four of their final five matches of the regular season at home against RSC foes Midway University (Oct. 13), Ohio Christian University (Oct. 15), Oakland City University (Oct. 20) and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Oct. 22).

5 - The number of appearances in the RSC postseason for the Red Wolves.

13 - IU East scored 13 goals as the Red Wolves won their last four contests of the 2021 regular season to reach the postseason. All four matches were on the road.

14 - Tristan Thomas had 14 points for the Red Wolves in 2021. He scored six goals and had two assists.

MATCHES TO WATCH

Aug. 20 vs. Rochester University - IU East opens the season against Rochester at Eaton (Ohio) High School as the Red Wolves face the Michigan school for the first time. The Warriors were 5-10-1 overall last year and 2-7-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Conference. Rochester was picked in 10th out of 12 teams in the WHAC preseason poll.

Sept. 14 at Earlham College - The Red Wolves visit their crosstown rivals in Richmond for the second time in school history. IU East won 3-0 in the other contest against the Quakers in 2017.

Sept. 29 vs. University of Rio Grande - IU East faces the No. 13 Red Storm in Eaton. Rio Grande is the RSC preseason favorite after posting a 17-3-1 overall mark with a 9-0 record in the conference.
