Baseball eliminated from NCAA regional

1

The Earlham College baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Regional Tournament at Lynchburg after falling to Salve Regina 7-6 on Saturday.

The Quakers conclude their 2022 season with a record of 26-13, while the Seahawks advance in the bracket.

After leading 6-0 in the middle of the fifth frame, the Quakers were shut out for the remainder of the contest.

Devin Basley led the Quaker bats with three hits on the day, including a triple and a double, and brought in three RBI. Zach Swearingen went two-for-two at the plate with two hits and one RBI.

Aidan Talarek started the game on the mound and threw 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. He surrendered one earned run in the fifth inning, and two in the sixth.

Neither side got much offense going in the first two innings. Andrew Bradley brought home the first run of the game in the top of the third frame with a single to left field. The Quakers were stranded with three runners on base at the end of the inning.

Basley brought in the next run in the top of the fourth from his triple to deep center field.

"The first at bat didn't go very well, so the second time up I was looking for offspeed since that's what I saw the first at bat." Said Basley after the game.

He was brought home by a sac fly from Jeordon Kuderer later in the inning to put Earlham up 3-0.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, Salve Regina threw a wild pitch that brought Nathan Lancianese in for the score. Up next, Basley hit a two-run double down the right field line and EC held a 6-0 lead over the Seahawks.

Salve scored its first run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning, and added three in the bottom of the sixth. As the Quakers went to the bullpen, the Seahawks added two more runs in the eighth inning before a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth.

Earlham concludes its season with a second trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament within five years. The Quakers have 11 graduating seniors on the roster, but a few could suit up again next year thanks to the blanket waiver by the NCAA during the pandemic.
