Men's Golf: IU at Ackerman-Allen Shootout Recap

25

Jake Miller finished fourth in the individual standings to highlight the day for the Indiana University East men's golf team on a winter-like afternoon at the Ackerman-Allen Shootout on April 18.

Miller posted an even-par round on the par-72, 6,983-yard Ackerman-Allen Course that is part of Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.

NAIA No. 16 Taylor University, the organizing school for the nine-team event, took the team title with a score of 290. IU East was fifth at 312. Marian University's Jay Williams was medalist with a score of 69.

The event was shortened from 36 holes to 18 holes and delayed by four-plus hours due to snowy conditions in northwest Indiana.

IU East's Rafael Beirana was 13th in the 49-player field with a score of 76. Emiliano Tercero (80), Kyle Cochran (84) and Austin Shelley (85) also braved the elements for IU East in the first of the Red Wolves' post-conference tournament events.

"Battling snow, sleet, and wind chills in the mid-20s, we got through it, and did so impressively," said IU East coach Jeff Williams after an evening to thaw out. "If you had told me Jake would shoot even par at the start, I would have handed him the medalist trophy on the spot. Probably his best round of golf as a Red Wolf. I was very happy to see Rafa put a solid round together. His spring season has been tough on him, but he is the ultimate golf grinder. Well-deserved success on his part. Kyle, Austin and Emiliano all competed to the last shot. Very proud of all of them."

IU East is scheduled to send split squads to two events this coming weekend. The Red Wolves' conference tournament lineup is scheduled to compete at the WVU Tech Golden Bear Classic in Daniels, W.Va. The Red Wolves who have not competed in April are scheduled to play at the Earlham College Spring Invitational at Elks Lodge and Country Club.
