Mobile Garbage Bin (MGB) – Information Sheet

City of Portland recently issued the following announcement.

City of Portland – Trash ordinance adopted March 14, 2022.

~A grace period of 1 month will be granted to allow customers to adapt to the new ordinance without being cited for the changes to the garbage collection ordinance.

Garbage / recycling collection fee, for city residents paying a water bill, is $5.50 per month. This fee includes 1 96-gallon toter.

~Additional MGB’s may be available for an additional $5.50 per toter/ month.

~Residents may also use their own personal MGB (96 gallons or smaller) that are compatible with the city’s trash trucks.

~Cans, barrels and other types of containers used before for trash will no longer be used for trash collection.

Cans, barrels and other types of containers set out will be disposed of by the City’s refuse collection crew.

MGB’s are the property of the City of Portland and have a serial number which is assigned to each residence. MBG’s must stay at the residence it is assigned to.

MGB’s are to be placed in the location that the city has always picked up your trash.

All trash and recycling are to be placed inside the MGB. This includes the green recycling bags.

~It is preferred that trash be placed in garbage bags before putting in the MGB.

~Items placed on the ground (not in the MGB) will not be picked up.

~If you have a larger item that does not fit inside the MGB, it will only be picked up after you have purchased a

“large item” permit from City Hall.

Electronics waste (E-Waste) items are prohibited from being disposed of by the City’s refuse collection crew.

E-Waste includes: Televisions, computer monitors, computers (all kinds), e-readers, fax machines, DVD players, gaming systems, digital photo frames, digital media players, iPods/ MP3 players, camcorders/ cameras, DVR/TiVo devices and portable GPS navigation systems.

Once per quarter the city will accept large items (free of charge) at the Street Department building.

~Items will be accepted with proof of residency through both (1) water bill and (2) driver’s license.

~Date and time will be posted accordingly. Target date would be a Saturday in March, June, September and December.
