Men's Basketball: St. Mary-Of-The-Woods 76, Iu East 72

The Indiana University East men's basketball team dropped another heartbreaker on Thursday, Feb. 2 when the Red Wolves fell 76-72 to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.

This was the second contest this week that the Red Wolves dropped in close fashion, when they lost at home against in-state rival IU Kokomo 75-72 on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, IU East falls to 12-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play, while the SMWC improves to 8-14 and 3-10 in conference play.

The game started off promising with IU East jumping out to an early 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The lead was quickly erased by the Pomeroys going on their own little run to tie the game early. The hosts used a late 7-0 run to take their biggest lead of the first half at 30-20 with just over two minutes to play. This run helped propel the Pomeroys to a 34-27 halftime lead.

The second half started with IU East digging themselves out of another nine-point deficit early. The Red Wolves showed toughness and solid defense and took their first lead 44-43 on a Jake Johnson jumper with 12:34 left to play.

Both teams took turns holding small leads until the the 2:16 mark left in the game, when Red Wolves came up empty on a couple of free throw attempts and a missed dunk that could have swung the momentum in their favor. Instead the Pomeroys closed on a 9-4 run to end the game and sealing the victory.

IU East had three players in double figures as Colt Meyer led the way with 20 points. Jake Johnson (17) and Jamisen Smith (10) rounded out the scoring. SMWC was led by Tarik Dixon with 18 points.

The Red Wolves will continue their road trip and look to snap their two-game losing streak on Tuesday, Feb. 7 when they travel to Oakland City University with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
